I've been taking Celebrex for years.

By John T. Cripe, MD, PharmD

A new study finds that the drug Celebrex, which belongs to the anti-inflammatory drug Celebrex, has an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. The study, led by researchers at the University of Minnesota, was published today in the journal

Researchers at University of Minnesota School of Pharmacy in Minneapolis found that patients taking the drug had a 44% higher risk of a heart attack and stroke, compared to patients taking a placebo.

Researchers found that patients taking Celebrex had a significantly higher incidence of heart attacks and strokes compared to patients taking a placebo, according to the study.

The study, by the University of Minnesota’s College of Pharmacy, involved patients with a history of heart disease or stroke who had taken Celebrex in the last six months. The researchers found that patients had a significantly higher incidence of heart attack and stroke, compared to patients taking a placebo.

“Celebrex, the active ingredient in Celebrex, is a clinically proven anti-inflammatory medication that has been shown to have fewer cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, but is still associated with more serious cardiovascular complications, including heart attacks and strokes,” the study’s authors said in a press release.

“This finding suggests that Celebrex may be a safe and effective alternative to traditional NSAIDs,” said study lead author Dr. Michael Schoenberg, associate professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy.

The study was published in the journal. The researchers used a data-driven approach to develop a hypothesis, that, by lowering inflammation, Celebrex would decrease the risk of heart attack and stroke.

The drug is an anti-inflammatory drug that belongs to the NSAID family, which means it can reduce inflammation by inhibiting an enzyme called cyclo-oxygenase-1 (COX-1). COX-1 is responsible for producing the body’s natural chemicals, which play a critical role in regulating blood flow and body temperature.

In addition to being a widely used drug, Celebrex has also been used to treat arthritis, a chronic condition that causes pain and inflammation in the joints, muscles, tendons, bones, and joints of people with arthritis.

Researchers discovered that patients taking Celebrex had a 46% higher incidence of heart attacks and stroke, compared to patients taking a placebo.

“The increased heart attack and stroke risk is a significant concern, and further studies are warranted to confirm these findings and determine the appropriate dosage and treatment,” said lead study author Dr. Steven Sacks, president of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. “We hope to continue to expand our research and research capabilities and to continue to expand our study database to capture important data on cardiovascular outcomes.”

Celebrex is used in a number of countries around the world and has been shown to be an effective treatment for heart attacks, such as those caused by coronary artery disease.

But it is not a cure for heart disease. Celebrex has been used to treat arthritis for decades. In 2015, researchers from the University of California at San Diego, the University of Minnesota and the University of Washington, both of which conduct clinical trials of Celebrex in patients with a rare form of arthritis called rheumatoid arthritis, found that the drug also reduced the risk of stroke.

Dr. Michael Schoenberg, who co-authored the study, said that “we are exploring new ways of evaluating the efficacy and safety of COX-1 inhibitors.”

“We believe that the research is important, but it’s important to understand that there are no proven drugs in the NSAID class that have fewer cardiovascular complications than other NSAIDs,” he said.

In the study, published in the journal, patients who took Celebrex in the last six months were also monitored for at-risk factors. Researchers assessed patients’ cardiovascular risk factors at baseline, including age, race, and personal habits. They then took a daily dose of Celebrex for the next six months.

During this six-month period, researchers tracked a cohort of 200 patients, and monitored cardiovascular and gastrointestinal parameters, to see if any of these changes improved or worsened the risk of heart attack or stroke.

These treatments can help reduce pain and inflammation in the joints, but they aren’t a cure. Celebrex, also known as CeleXa, belongs to a class of medications called anti-inflammatory drugs (or NSAIDs). It works by reducing the production of chemicals in the body that cause pain and inflammation. These chemicals cause enzymes to break down and damage cells in the body. Celecoxib is a prescription medication that’s used to treat pain and inflammation in the joints, muscles, and other parts of the body. This medication can reduce pain and inflammation and can be taken twice a day. Celecoxib may decrease stiffness, pain, or swelling in your joints. Talk to your doctor to determine if Celebrex is the best choice for you.
